Risk-Takers

Makenna made her first meal for the family.  She was intent on doing it on her own.  I wanted her to make something fun and out of the ordinary, so that she felt like she had done something extra special, and to help her find the joy in cooking.  I personally have never made the family a taco ring, but have always wanted to.  I spent some time searching out the recipe and realized that it was simple.  We went to the store and got the ingredients,  along with some avacados to make her favorite thing ever: Guacamole!

Despite several interuptions including a phone call from a boy (where she giggled and said strange things that made her sound super cool) she was able to make it pretty much on her own.  She was so excited when it came out of the oven looking perfect and she was able to fill the center with her yummy guacamole, and throw on some olives and tomatoes making it looking like a fancy dish.

She is growing up.

Last week she came home from school beaming.  She explained that each student in the school was asked to write what it meant to them to be a Risk-Taker, their trait of the month.  The teachers from each grade met and selected just one students thoughts and let that child read their paper over the intercom.  Her paper was selected from the 100 in her grade.  She was really proud and a little nervous.  She read:

Risk- Takers by Makenna Godfrey
To me Risk-Taker used to mean to jump off a cliff, but then I came to Providence Hall and learned it's more than just jumping off cliffs and to eat worms.  I learned that Risk-Takers means I try new things like reading a new book that looks like it might be boring.  Risk-Taker also means more than just trying new things.  It means to have courage to believe in yourself.

So I need to take her definition of a risk-taker and use it more! Sometimes I would rather eat worms than try new things that seem too hard. Next time you are treated to a taco ring give us a call.

Aww! That is so sweet! It must be so hard and at the same time immensely satisfying to see them becoming ever more independent. I want to go to Providence Hall :)

Way to go girl. She is getting so big. And what a brave family for letting her do it on her own and willing to eat it. I guess they have to start some where.
